Overview

The one-year BSc (top-up) in Animal Therapy and Rehabilitation course is aimed at people who wish to upgrade a Level 5 qualification in animal therapy studies, such as the FdSc in Animal Therapy and Rehabilitation, to a BSc (Hons) qualification. This course will allow you to develop and expand on your scientific knowledge of animal therapy and rehabilitation, alongside practical application of this knowledge within animal therapy industries. The focus is on canines but includes a range of other small and large species. Within this course there are opportunities to develop your academic skills, through critical analysis and evaluation of contemporary research. You may also acquire an accredited Level 3 Certificate in Small Animal Hydrotherapy.

Graduates may progress into graduate roles within animal therapy industries or may continue their studies by progressing onto Level 7 studies, such as Masters degree courses.

Students will usually have achieved an average grade (GPA) of 55% in Fd(Sc) Animal Behaviour and Welfare or an equivalent relevant animal related level 5 qualification of 240 CAT points, subject to individual credit rating by Oxford Brookes

Specific entry requirements

Students who have not studied the Oxford Brookes Fd(Sc) in Animal Behaviour and Welfare will need to produce a transcript of the modules and learning outcomes they have studied on their level 5 course to allow credit rating and evidence coverage of sufficient comparable content to allow entrance to this BSc year.

Students who have studied HND in Animal Management or equivalent HND will need an overall merit profile.

It may be possible, in certain situations, to gain accreditation of prior learning to enable students to enter the course with advanced standing or gain exemption from an element/ elements of the programme. This is assessed on an individual basis and is awarded in line with Oxford Brookes University’s regulations on accreditation of prior learning.

Applicants with non-standard entry qualifications may be admitted with APL (accreditation for prior learning) or APEL (accreditation for prior experiential learning) in accordance with university regulations.


Our standard entry requirement is three A-levels or equivalent qualifications. In some cases, courses have specific required subjects and additional GCSE requirements. In addition to A-levels, we accept a wide range of other qualifications including:

 the Welsh Baccalaureate
 the Access to Higher Education Diploma
 a BTEC National Certificate, Diploma or Extended Diploma at a good standard and in a relevant subject
 the International Baccalaureate Diploma
 the European Baccalaureate Diploma
 Scottish qualifications – five subjects in SCE with two at Higher level or one at Advanced Higher level, or three subjects in Scottish Highers or two at Advanced Higher level
 a recognised foundation course
 T-levels*.
 * T-levels are a relatively new qualification but are already included in the UCAS tariff. We welcome prospective students who are taking this qualification to apply. For some programmes with specific required subjects, particular subject areas or occupational specialisms may be required.

Selection process

There are limited places on the course and the above requirements are minimum requirements. Gaining a place on the course will also be subject to a successful interview and a strong UCAS application with an appropriate reference.

English language requirements

If English is not your first language then you will need to show that your English language skills are at a high enough level to succeed in your studies.

The entry requirement for your course will be expressed as an IELTS level and refers to the IELTS Academic version of this test. We are now also accepting the IELTS Indicator test, you can find out more about the test on the IELTS Indication site. The University however does accept a wide range of additional English language qualifications, which can be found below.

The university’s English language requirements in IELTS levels are as follows:
